Happy for No Reason
When Kyle and I went on vacation last month, I realized that I forgot to take stuff to entertain myself on the airplane. So we went into the airport bookstore and bought a couple books. I found Happy for No Reason by Marci Shimoff and decided it might be a good one. Now I just want to clarify...the first thing everyone asks me that find out I'm reading this, is what's wrong, are you not happy. That's not it at all. In fact, she pretty much hits the nail right on the head within the first chapter. She wrote this book, not just for those that are miserable. It's to help those who are unhappy be happy, and those that are happy, be happier. I fit into the second category. Let's be honest....who doesn't want to be happier, no matter how happy they are. I finished reading it this morning. It is a really good book and I highly recommend it. I had the advantage, while reading it, of being able to add gospel principals, that she doesn't have, to her points she makes. For example, one of the points she makes is our thoughts making us miserable. Think of a situation you are in (or have been in) that makes/made you really unhappy or uneasy. Then think about what it is that is making you so uphappy. Is it something real and physical or is it your overactive imagination telling you that the situation is so much worse than it really is. I really struggle with this. After having it pointed out to me, I've taken every negative situation I've experienced, stopped, and thought, it is really that bad or am I making it worse than it really is? The thing she doesn't say is that it is satan that is telling you that someone is upset with you or that you are a bad person or whatever. I just don't explain it quite as well as she does.....that's why she writes books and I don't! She interviews what she calls the happy 100, which are the 100 happiest people she could find. She includes several of their amazing stories and some of them really tug on your heart strings. Anyway....if you're looking for a boost in your happiness and greater appreciation, I would definitely recommend reading this book. If you want to borrow it, let me know. If you want to buy a copy, I bought one as a gift for someone for a great price (a lot cheaper than the airport) off Ebay!
